Education

One of the best sources of information regarding education for both African Americans and whites from 1867-1887 are the State Superintendent of Public Instruction reports. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction is the state superintendent of education in the state of Tennessee. The reports, compiled by the state superintendent's office and the Tennessee Department of Education, are full of statistics that craft a more complete picture of education in Tennessee; county by county. Selected statistics have been combined, for ease of viewing, into graphs and charts.

This portion of the exhibit is designed to give the viewer an understanding of the educational environment of Rutherford County from 1867-1887. The idea is to attempt to create a world in which to place Emma Carney, Corilla Beard Smith, Letitia Faurot, and A. A. Brown; facilitating a better understanding of these four individuals.
